Hi everyone,
Haven't been on the forum for a while but can somebody help me - since being on methotrexate, I seem to have developed an aversion to eggs. The moment I eat an egg I have to run to the bathroom to vomit. Has anybody else experienced this?
Also I am finding that I am very short of breath with the just the slightest exercise. My last appointment with my GP I had my blood pressure taken and it was high but he did not say to come back to sort it out. I am now going once a month for my bloods to be taken - so I have not seen anyone for approx 3 weeks. Has anyone experienced this with their GP.
I would be interested to hear
Thanks
Jane

injections of mtx can be a good answer.

Hi Jane
Yeh with eggs for a while they upset my stomach, sent me running to the loo, but I seem ok now, providing I eat hard boiled eggs, for some reason I cant tolerate soft boiled eggs any more (I take methotrexate and leflunomide)
Re the breathlessness. I have had that and its frightening isnt it. Do you have a Rheumatology helpline to ring? You should report it to the Rheumy nurse. I did and she sent me for a lung function test and chest xray (as Methotrexate can affect the lungs) and both were normal (but you should get this checked out), no one seemed to have an answer for the breathlessness but it was just as you describe, with the slightest effort. However, I think with me it might be linked to fatigue and a prelude to a flare. The fatigue and breathlessness got so bad the other week , my joints were hurting but they were not really that bad. The Rheum nurse gave me an intramuscular steroid injection and within days the breathlessness had gone (although it is there a bit the day after I take MTX but not too bad). The same thing happened in December and it was resolved with a steroid injection. However I wish someone could tell me if RA causes breathlessness.
Re the blood pressure - I had high BP before I got RA so I know its important to have it monitored, some meds (like Leflunomide can put it up a bit) other times I am sure RA does. I would make an appointment maybe with the practice nurse and get it taken, or get it taken when you have your next blood test.
Hope I have helped and you are feeling better soon.

Hi Jane Methotrexate can cause problems with certain strong smelling/tasting foods making it permanently difficult to eat those foods. Usually more common on much higher doses than used for RA but nonetheless it does happen! Possibly a small sacrifice for improved joints?! Might be worth thinking about Mtx injections instead of oral meds. Although rheumatoid arthritis mainly affects the joints and surrounding tissues, it can also affect the lungs. In particular pleurisy, inflammation of the lining of the lungs which causes sharp pain when breathing, or pleural effusion which is fluid collection accumulating round the lungs leading to shortness of breath. Anything like this needs checking out whilst taking Mtx. It could be a low grade infection causing the problem and this could be easily resolved with antibiotics. Often GP's leave things with the Rheumatologist to sort out but I have always found a good relationship with your GP really helps to move things along. Certainly worth a follow up appointment to mention your concerns. Hope you get some answers! Lyn x

Hi Jane
Can't help with the egg thing, but would certainly recommend you see your GP about the breathlesness. Anything like this should be checked sooner rather than later.

Hi Jane I think there's been discussion somewhere else on the forum about mtx and taste changes. It seems as though - when taking mtx - some of us experience changes in the things we like the taste of. I can no longer eat cucumber, which I used to eat quite happily, but now it makes me retch. Don't think there's any scientific explanation for it though so no solution. I don't remember anyone else saying that any foods actually made them vomit though, so you are having quite an extreme reaction.
As for the breathlessness, have you got one of the little red books they give you when you start on mtx? I think it says something in there about if you become breathless. Think you should ring the gp if nothing else.

Hi Jane, I only got strange taste reaction on sulphasalazine - been ok on MTX. I would definitely pop in to GP about the breathlessness. Could be some simple reason but definitely worth checking. I was getting breathless some months ago and it was raised blood pressure - possibly due to meds. Take care.

Hi Jane,
Like Julie I got taste problems on Sulfasalazine, thankfully I stopped that last August. It was curry I could not eat and that was one of my favorites both Indian and Chinese. I could not stomach even the smell of them up until around 6 months after I stopped taking the tablets. I have noticed at the weekend I felt the water in the shower really hot when it was on cool. I like a hot shower but the MTX the night before affected me on Sunday morning. Thats the first time I was aware of that as I have been taking it for nearly 3 years. Lorna x

Thank you all for your replies - I took your advice and went to the GP's regarding my shortness of breath. He listened to my chest and didn't think it was down to the MTX - he gave me Ventolin inhaler as he thought it could be pollen hayfever (he was not my normal doctor but a locum)! I have been using this but I know this sounds a bit daft but I can feel my heart racing and I still have the cough my blood pressure was up. I am thinking I might ring the NRAS helpline and see what they say. I am due for an appointment with my RA consultant soon as it is nearly six months since my last one. Has anyone else had any of these symptoms. I do try to push it all on the "back burner" as if it is not really important (denial I suppose) Hope you are all keeping well Jane

Hi Jane - the Ventolin can make your heart feel like it's racing - some people get like a trembling feeling as well after taking it. (I've used it in the past.) If it's not helping the breathlessness overall I think you should go back to your GP soon. I wouldn't wait until your rheumy appointment. Take care.

Hi
When I was on mtx I got short of breath and started to develop a cough and when my bloods was taken I had to come off mtx so you need to check with your rummy nurse.
good luck
